Today we are moving on to learning all about Ancient Egyptian rituals and beliefs about the afterlife.

Did you know ancient Egyptians only lived on the east side of the River Nile?
The reason they lived on the eastern side was because the west side was where they buried their dead - this was because the sun sets in the west and so this is where ancient Egyptians believed the afterlife was.

TASK 3: DISCUSSION of key facts
- Priests performed the "Opening of the Mouth" ritual so the deceased could eat and drink in the afterlife.
- Special items were placed in the sarcophagus to prepare the dead for their journey to the afterlife including: amulets, jewellery, and The Book of the Dead.
- The Book of the Dead was made of papyrus and contained spells, prayers and all the correct answers the deceased would need to tell the Gods before they could continue the journey to the afterlife.
- The journey involved a number of steps including the Hall of Two Truths where a panel of 42 Gods would ask these questions to decide on the virtue of the deceased.
- Osiris was name of the Chief God of the Dead. He would weigh the heart of the deceased against the feather of truth, order and justice. The heart had to be lighter than the feather to qualify to enter the afterlife.
